About the Department
The Turkish Language and Literature Undergraduate Program trains qualified individuals who can educate themselves in the field of Turkish language, culture, and literature in line with the mission of the Cyprus International University. The department aims to benefit the country and society by sharing knowledge via education and training, in order to be able to successfully represent the university. Various trips and social activities are organized to ease students' social adaptation. Conferences, panels, etc. are also organized on a regular basis. Through academic meetings, our students have the opportunity to meet and talk with experts working in this field and in different fields. During national memorial days, activities are organized with the contributions of students. Furthermore, foreign language learning is encouraged.
Accreditations
Turkish Language and Literature Program has been accredited by the Association for the Evaluation and Accreditation of Science, Literature, Science-Literature, Language and History-Geography (FEDEK), which is a leading accreditation institution, since 24th February 2018, and continues its educational activities within this framework.
Education Opportunities
The program, besides the lessons of the main branches of science, offers courses such as Turkish Folk Literature, New Turkish Literature, Old Turkish Literature and Turkish Language, Western Literature, World Literature, Turkish Cypriot Literature, Turkish Culture History, Thought History, Aesthetics, Children's Literature, and Mythology. In the course of Turkish Folk Literature and Folklore, students gain the skills of analyzing and interpreting Turkish folk culture. In addition to studying the literary trends of Tanzimat in the course of the New Turkish Literature, students develop skills of critical thinking built on a scientific basis and with the examination of selected texts in light of contemporary art movements, literary theories, and criticism methods. In old literary teaching the following subjects will be discussed: classification of Turkish Literature History, sources of Turkish Literature, decomposition of People, Divan and Tekke-Sufi literature, starting from Pre-Islamic Process XII.
Career Areas
Graduates of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature can teach Turkish language and literature in secondary education within the framework of the relevant legislation. They can produce programs, become news editors or presenters in radio and television broadcasting organizations. Those who develop themselves in the field of Ottoman Turkish may be directed to libraries and archival institutions. They can also edit the Turkish language used in the media. They can work in various private and official institutions in the field of folklore. The field of artistic production of literature is also a bright and interesting undertaking for our graduates. The lessons given to the Turkish world would provide broad business opportunities for those seeking to work in the Central Asian Turkic Republics. If students decide to pursue our graduate programs, they can graduate from a Ph.D. degree in science to be able to work at various universities as teaching staff.

The course introduces students with basic speech patterns at the elementary level. Through listening students will identify different sound rhythms and practice pronounciation of letters, words and phrases. This course will introduce the Arab alphabet used in Ottoman Turkish from the 15th Century until the first quarter of the 20th Century and cover letter connections and written sounds. Structural characteristics of words in Turkish, Arabic, and Farsi will be examined along with written vowels in Turkish words with word root suffixes. Infinitive forms of Arabic words and knowledge of existing templates will be covered in addition to pre-conjugations styles in Arabic. Relational styles in Arabic and Farsi will be introduced and compared with the structure and meaning of Turkish propositions. Finally, the writing and structure of Ottoman Turkish is supported with the reading of selected poetic and prosaic texts, translations using the transcription alphabet, and writing with the classic alphabet will be done.

To understand literary science, words, concepts, and methods used in Contemporary Turkish Literature will be covered. The scope, limitations, periods, frequently used methods, and basic poetry terms will be examined. With the Westernization of the Ottoman Era (the Lale Period, Embassies, the French Revolution, the Imperial Edict of Reorganization, the Royal Edict of Reform, Education-Learning Activities, Writers, the Privy Council, Estates, Translations, Newspapers), changes in socio-political life, differences between the classic and contemporary poems, theatre as a new style and its development will be explored. The goal of Turkish language and literature education is to teach knowledge and theories from related areas in an applied manner. This course begins with the basic concepts of Turkish grammar and language analysis are taught via these basic principles. The status of Turkish among world languages, typology and kinship among world languages, main language groups, and sub-branches are examined. Within the language unity where Turkish stands, common sounds, structures, and syntax with other languages are explained with examples. The formation of Turkish, speaking times, sounds according to formation areas, and how these sounds are depicted in written language will be discussed. Sound harmony and changes based on environmental factors will be introduced with examples. INGL122 is the continuation of INGL121. The course integrates the four main skills at a higher elementary level for students. Through recessive skills, which are listening and reading, students identify different sound rhythms and practice the pronunciation of letters, words and phrases. Also, by reading higher level paragraphs and texts, students infere the meaning of new words by using their existing vocabulary. Through productive skills, which are speaking and writing, students identify different register and use the given language in an appropriate way. With the standardization of written Ottoman Turkish in the second half of the 15th Century, changes throughout the first quarter of the 20th Century will be examined via texts. Letters, styles of how letters are reflected as sounds will be covered via grammar and connections will be demonstrated. The structure of words and changing meanings in Turkish, Arabic, and Farsi, and information on word structures and conjugations will also be given. Syntax applications are conducted and boundaries are drawn between stereotypical compound words and word groups. Word group formations are shown and classified. This course starts with the introduction of linquistics, content, theoretical framework, and the methodological differences between grammar and this scientific field are explained. Before structural linquistics, the historical process of language analyses is given following Saussure's modern linquistics establishment and primary concepts. In this course types of signs are introduced, where schools after Saussure, who focused on the separation of language and word, and Chomsky's relationship between competence and performance, are emphasized. The Reorganization Era is the beginning of Westernization in our literature where novels and stories are new styles. Modern novel analysis methods are examined. 13th century Ghuzz Turks established and developed what is known as today's Turkish based on their own dialect. The developmental process of Classic Anatolian Turkish is covered. Sources of Ghuzz dialects, 13 centuries ago, are examined and connected with other historical Turkish dialectic resources. The unique phonetic and mophological features of this written language is divided into individual periods of the Seljuck, Beyliks, and the Transition to Ottoman Turkish. Key features of historical text transmission are taught, which starts with printed texts in the form of essays. Hand written works are analyzed and transcribed. Selected works from Dede Korkut, Süheyl ü Nevbahar, and Yusuf u Zeliha, which reflect the linguistic characteristics of the era, are analyzed and evaluated using field resources.

Historical Turkish dialect formation conditions and developmental stages are examined and the writing, sounds, structure, and meaning of Karahanlı Turkish is examined. General characteristics of the transition are reflected in Kutadgu Bilig, Atabetü’l-Hakayık and Divanu Lugati’t-Turk. Language specifics are analyzed with selected texts. Findings from analyses are compared with Kokturkish and Uigur, which aided in the writing process of Karahanlı Turkish. The class starts with the first source of written Turkish language, Gokturkish, and covers the development of written language of today. Various language data sources, based on the pre-Gokturk period are used, and the historical development of the Runic alphabet and older Turkish texts written with older written systems. The general content of Kultegin, Bilge Khan, and Tonyukuk epigraphs are introduced and text readings are done. The course continues with literary types from Uyghur Turks and the changes in language are examined. The changes in alphabet in Karahan and Harezm and its influence on modern dialects are detected via text analysis. The aim of this course is to help students develop skills to examine the recent past of Cyprus from a historical perspective since the Ottoman conquest, and know more the island. The formation of Muslim community, Orthodox Christians and other people of Cyprus: Armenians, Maronites, Jewish and the others, Orthodox Church; Ottoman Modernization: local advisory councils, the advent of Telegram, Nicosia Rüştiye (first modern secondary school), non-Muslims’ educational and cultural institutions, Quarantine, soldiering; British colonial rule and administrative institutions; cultural, social and economic transformation; The rise of Greek nationalism, Enosis, Turkish Cypriot nationalism; de-colonization and foundation of Republic of Cyprus, intercommunal conflicts, the foundation of TRNC, Cyprus Question, Intercommunal talks, Annan Plan and Referanda, are the main content of the course.
TRNC citizens and TR citizen candidate students who have completed their entire high school education in TRNC. They are placed in undergraduate programs in line with their success in the CIU Student Placement and Scholarship Ranking Exam and the programs they prefer.
Students who are successful in the exam can register from the TRNC Marketing Office.
TR Students who are successful in the exams conducted by the Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) and are entitled to enroll in our university in line with their preferences can complete the registration process with the necessary documents for registration from our Registration and Liaison Offices throughout Turkey or from the Marketing Directorate on campus.

Tuition Fees are determined at the beginning of each academic year. Candidate students who are entitled to enroll in CIU can learn their fees in line with the Tuition Fee Calculation system.
