About the Department

The Turkish Language and Literature Undergraduate Program trains qualified individuals who can educate themselves in the field of Turkish language, culture, and literature in line with the mission of the Cyprus International University. The department aims to benefit the country and society by sharing knowledge via education and training, in order to be able to successfully represent the university. Various trips and social activities are organized to ease students' social adaptation. Conferences, panels, etc. are also organized on a regular basis. Through academic meetings, our students have the opportunity to meet and talk with experts working in this field and in different fields. During national memorial days, activities are organized with the contributions of students. Furthermore, foreign language learning is encouraged.

Accreditations

Turkish Language and Literature Program has been accredited by the Association for the Evaluation and Accreditation of Science, Literature, Science-Literature, Language and History-Geography (FEDEK), which is a leading accreditation institution, since 24th February 2018, and continues its educational activities within this framework.

Education Opportunities

The program, besides the lessons of the main branches of science, offers courses such as Turkish Folk Literature, New Turkish Literature, Old Turkish Literature and Turkish Language, Western Literature, World Literature, Turkish Cypriot Literature, Turkish Culture History, Thought History, Aesthetics, Children's Literature, and Mythology. In the course of Turkish Folk Literature and Folklore, students gain the skills of analyzing and interpreting Turkish folk culture. In addition to studying the literary trends of Tanzimat in the course of the New Turkish Literature, students develop skills of critical thinking built on a scientific basis and with the examination of selected texts in light of contemporary art movements, literary theories, and criticism methods. In old literary teaching the following subjects will be discussed: classification of Turkish Literature History, sources of Turkish Literature, decomposition of People, Divan and Tekke-Sufi literature, starting from Pre-Islamic Process XII.

Career Areas

Graduates of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature can teach Turkish language and literature in secondary education within the framework of the relevant legislation. They can produce programs, become news editors or presenters in radio and television broadcasting organizations. Those who develop themselves in the field of Ottoman Turkish may be directed to libraries and archival institutions. They can also edit the Turkish language used in the media. They can work in various private and official institutions in the field of folklore. The field of artistic production of literature is also a bright and interesting undertaking for our graduates. The lessons given to the Turkish world would provide broad business opportunities for those seeking to work in the Central Asian Turkic Republics. If students decide to pursue our graduate programs, they can graduate from a Ph.D. degree in science to be able to work at various universities as teaching staff.

The course introduces students with basic speech patterns at the elementary level. Through listening students will identify different sound rhythms and practice pronounciation of letters, words and phrases. Through speaking students will identify different register and use the given language in an appropriate way. In addition students will be able to define themselves or others, answer questions in the Present Simple tense, use the prepositions of place, and talk about their daily routines. Through reading students read paragraphs and simple texts to improve their general comprehension of the passages, and answer the given comprehension questions. Through writing, students will be able to compose guided,controlled paragpahps in the Present Simple tense, and recycle the obtained new vocabulary to produce their own sentences.

This course will introduce the Arab alphabet used in Ottoman Turkish from the 15th Century until the first quarter of the 20th Century and cover letter connections and written sounds. Structural characteristics of words in Turkish, Arabic, and Farsi will be examined along with written vowels in Turkish words with word root suffixes. Infinitive forms of Arabic words and knowledge of existing templates will be covered in addition to pre-conjugations styles in Arabic. Relational styles in Arabic and Farsi will be introduced and compared with the structure and meaning of Turkish propositions. Finally, the writing and structure of Ottoman Turkish is supported with the reading of selected poetic and prosaic texts, translations using the transcription alphabet, and writing with the classic alphabet will be done.

To understand literary science, words, concepts, and methods used in Contemporary Turkish Literature will be covered. The scope, limitations, periods, frequently used methods, and basic poetry terms will be examined. With the Westernization of the Ottoman Era (the Lale Period, Embassies, the French Revolution, the Imperial Edict of Reorganization, the Royal Edict of Reform, Education-Learning Activities, Writers, the Privy Council, Estates, Translations, Newspapers), changes in socio-political life, differences between the classic and contemporary poems, theatre as a new style and its development will be explored. The life, publications, thoughts regarding published, and literary perspectives of first generation reorganization authors like Şinasi, Ziya Pasa, and Namık Kemal will be examined. The goal of Turkish language and literature education is to teach knowledge and theories from related areas in an applied manner. By knowing basic literary knowledge and theories, this course will cover the art of literature, its relationship with other fields, its functions, literary products, the development of literary styles, the definition of poetry and prose, its characteristics, and types and forms of poetry. This course begins with the basic concepts of Turkish grammar and language analysis are taught via these basic principles. The status of Turkish among world languages, typology and kinship among world languages, main language groups, and sub-branches are examined. Within the language unity where Turkish stands, common sounds, structures, and syntax with other languages are explained with examples. The formation of Turkish, speaking times, sounds according to formation areas, and how these sounds are depicted in written language will be discussed. Sound harmony and changes based on environmental factors will be introduced with examples. Coinage in Turkish, suffix functions in word proccessing, and the relationship between suffix and word root are supported with applications. Methods of coinage, without derivations, are classified according to specified samples.

INGL122 is the continuation of INGL121. The course integrates the four main skills at a higher elementary level for students. Through recessive skills, which are listening and reading, students identify different sound rhythms and practice the pronunciation of letters, words and phrases. Also, by reading higher level paragraphs and texts, students infere the meaning of new words by using their existing vocabulary. Through productive skills, which are speaking and writing, students identify different register and use the given language in an appropriate way. Furthermore, students use the Present Continuous and Past Simple tenses to participate in basic dialogues and daily exchanges, and express themselves effectively. Also, through writing, students produce their own sentences by recycling the obtained new vocabulary in guided, controlled paragraphs they compose.

With the standardization of written Ottoman Turkish in the second half of the 15th Century, changes throughout the first quarter of the 20th Century will be examined via texts. Letters, styles of how letters are reflected as sounds will be covered via grammar and connections will be demonstrated. The structure of words and changing meanings in Turkish, Arabic, and Farsi, and information on word structures and conjugations will also be given. Reading and transcription exercises from 19th Century printed Turkish literary texts will be done. Pre-19th Century written text structure, general features of handwritten pieces, and various forms of calligraphy will be introduced and writing exercises will be done. New styles and concepts that developed with the Westernization of Turkish Literature, New Turkish Literature sources and its specifics will be examined over societal and socio-cultural structures. This course focuses on standard language, word structures, meanings, and main features are grouped within itself. Terms of structure and simple, derivative, and compound words in Turkish are examined. Informaiton on basic meaning, connotations, word meanings, and figurative meanings are given where connections between meaning varieties among word and dictionary are established. The role of meaning changes in term areas are discussed. Based on its use, sub-type boundaries and differences are determined between nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and adverbs. Syntax applications are conducted and boundaries are drawn between stereotypical compound words and word groups. Word group formations are shown and classified. Name and adjective noun phrases, the status of these noun phrases, and types are comparatively examined. Verbal and other shortcut groups will also be examined within the course. Using selected works from Turkish literature, word group analyses will be conducted to reinforce gained knowledge. After moving to sentences, differences in meaning and function between word groups are demonstrated. With mid-generation artisans, the Wealth of Sciences era is introduced as a leading school in Contemporary Turkish Literature where the community, political environments, historical developments, and societal structures are examined. The "new"-"old" fight, Ekrem-Naci debate, "new" groupings: primary reasons for the organization of the Wealth of Science group, primary features of the era's poetry and the innovations brought to Turkish poetry are discussed. This course starts with the introduction of linquistics, content, theoretical framework, and the methodological differences between grammar and this scientific field are explained. Before structural linquistics, the historical process of language analyses is given following Saussure's modern linquistics establishment and primary concepts. In this course types of signs are introduced, where schools after Saussure, who focused on the separation of language and word, and Chomsky's relationship between competence and performance, are emphasized. Methods used in basic areas of linquistics such as phonology and morphology are introduced, phonem and morpheme theories are covered. Segment and suprasegmental phonemes, associated and independent morphemes are explained. Basic applications in semantics are carried out concurrently with Turkish methodology. The Reorganization Era is the beginning of Westernization in our literature where novels and stories are new styles. Modern novel analysis methods are examined. The general tendencies and novelties of the Era are evaluated. Haliz Ziya Uşaklıgil and his works are used to help understand the development and its effects on Turkish stories. Mehmet Rauf and Hüseyin Cahit's literary personalities, their story and novels are analyzed. The course will cover Turkish dialects other than Turkey's Turkish and focus on writing Turkish with different alphabets. Ghuzz, Kıpcak, Karluk, and other branches of Turkish dialects will be classified according to linguistic measures. Focus will be on the Ghuzz group and the historical chronology of Azerbaycan Turkish is used where Arab, Kyril, and Latin alphabet based text analyses will be done. This Turkish dialect's phonetic, morphological, and syntactic features are examined. Turkmen and Gagavuz Turkish dialect commonalities and differences will be shown via texts. In this course, the ability of students to understand and evaluate the poetry texts of the ancient Turkish Literature between the 16th and 19th centuries and compering the relation between the work of the period with the Works of the other periods is improved. Style and context of poetical and prosaic Works are learned. By understanding the relation of the ancient Turkish Literature period Works with the Works of the other periods, the historical process of the text (changes and transformations is known). Students became aware of the change of the style. They gain the ability of the understanding, explaining and interpreting the ancient Turkish poetry by analyzing the sample poems. In this course, specialty of the style and context of the texts from the ancient Turkish Literature is understand by studyingt and analyzing the texts. Evaluation of the style by analyzing the texts of the period is done. The relation between the ancient Turkish poetry and Arabian and Persian Literatures is studies through the applied courses.

TRNC citizens and TR citizen candidate students who have completed their entire high school education in TRNC. They are placed in undergraduate programs in line with their success in the CIU Student Placement and Scholarship Ranking Exam and the programs they prefer.

Students who are successful in the exam can register from the TRNC Marketing Office.

TR Students who are successful in the exams conducted by the Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) and are entitled to enroll in our university in line with their preferences can complete the registration process with the necessary documents for registration from our Registration and Liaison Offices throughout Turkey or from the Marketing Directorate on campus.
