International Project Management Day

Cyprus International University (CIU) School of Applied Sciences in collaboration with Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Computer Engineers (CTCCE) organized an event to celebrate the International Project Management Day. CIU Vice-rector Prof. Dr. Erbuğ Çelebi and Director of Ince Eletronics Ltd. Muhit Ince made presentations at the event held at the Conference Hall in CIU Çevik Uraz Center.

Speaking at the opening of the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Damla Karagözlü, Director of the School of Applied Sciences, reminded that the International Project Management Day was celebrated for the 20th time all over the world and expressed their pleasure in collaborating with CTCCE to organize such an event.

CTCCE President Togan Çakmak stated at the opening that they were happy to take part in such an organization and emphasized the significance of such an organization in terms of bringing together experts and academics working in different fields in the sector.

In his presentation at the event, CIU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Çelebi drew attention to the importance of the software systems that companies utilize today and stated that they develop 95% of the software they use within the university themselves. Çelebi also stated that it is not easy for small-scale companies to have a software team, and added, “If you are a large organization, having a software team is very important because if you have a new idea, that idea can be designed immediately and implemented into your system.”  Çelebi also pointed out that companies working with their own software teams also accelerate the flow of work and that the company's data remains within the company. Çelebi added that large companies have millions of data, but all data should be easily usable and comparable to past data, and said, "First of all, you need to have well-organized data."

Speaking at the event, İnce Electronics Ltd. Director Muhit İnce said that he has been working in a family owned company and added, “Our expertise is actually in managing resources and people.” İnce reminded that our world today depends on resources and pointed out that they have many needs regarding local resources such as time, human resources and financial resources. Ince stated that in theory, one can make excellent progress, that is, become a good project manager or engineer, “But when you are in the field, the situation may change. That is why it is important to compare theory with reality.”  İnce also pointed out that projects are not just a matter of depending on the individual, saying, “You have to take the stakeholders into account, so when you go to project sites, there may be customers, other companies, electricians, mechanics and many others working in the same field.  This is why we have to know them, plus we have to know how to interact with them.”

Okpihwo Silas, a student in the School of Applied Sciences, received an award for giving the best answer in the Q&A session of the event, and this was followed by the presentation of plaques to the speakers indicating the meaning and importance of the day.
