CIU Holds 2026–2027 Academic Year Opening Ceremony

Cyprus International University (CIU) held its 2026–2027 Academic Year Opening Ceremony and First Lecture programme. The event addressed the goals and priorities of the university for the new academic year. CIU Rector Prof. Dr. Erbuğ Çelebi delivered the opening address, while Prof. Dr. Halil Güven, Honorary Dean of the STEM Campus at San Diego State University, delivered the first lecture, entitled “Key Elements of the 21st-Century Economy and the Challenges of the Millennium.” Artificial intelligence, digital transformation, research, sustainability, innovation, and the skills of the future were among the key topics highlighted during the programme.

Emphasizing that the new academic year offers new goals and opportunities for the university, Prof. Dr. Erbuğ Çelebi drew attention to the ways in which artificial intelligence and digital technologies are transforming education, research, and working practices. He stated that the key priorities for the new academic year include strengthening research and publication capacity, providing students with more opportunities for hands-on learning, expanding the use of artificial intelligence and software in administrative processes, and accelerating quality assurance and accreditation initiatives. Çelebi also noted that CIU ranks in the 651–700 band in the Times Higher Education rankings, 55th worldwide in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, and 615th in the U.S. News Global Rankings.

In his first lecture, Prof. Dr. Halil Güven explored the transformation of the 21st-century economy, explaining that digitalization, the data economy, artificial intelligence, innovation, and STEM fields play a decisive role in shaping the economic landscape of the future. Noting that the pace at which technology spreads has increased to an extent incomparable with previous periods, Güven emphasized that universities must adapt to this transformation and equip students not only with theoretical knowledge but also with practical skills.

Güven stated that the world faces numerous global challenges, including wars, economic inequalities, the climate crisis, population growth, urbanization, and cybersecurity threats. He explained that human creativity, innovation, and technology play an important role in addressing these challenges. Highlighting the importance of sustainability, Güven also stressed that universities must strengthen their environmental responsibility and commented on CIU’s achievement of ranking 55th worldwide in the UI GreenMetric rankings.

Concluding his speech with the message that “balance” should be at the foundation of life, Güven emphasized that a successful life depends not only on an individual's knowledge and skills but also on the ability to express oneself and one's work effectively. Underlining the importance of communication and storytelling in professional life, Güven encouraged students to develop strong communication skills that would enable them to share their knowledge and abilities with society.
